THE BAND

"So here's a quick rundown on how this project came about. I basically had these songs I've wanted to record for quite some time and I just never thought they worked in with the band I was doing, so they were put on the backburner. I approached Mike D and asked him if he would play guitar/bass and I would play drums/sing for a quick demo. Mike added some cool stuff to the songs and we managed to record 5 originals and 1 cover(Chaos by The 4 Skins). We are really excited about this, so we put up 2 songs which gives you an idea of our sound. In short, S.S.S.P.(Skinheads Still Scare People), is about Truth, Integrity, and Sincerity, which I feel has been falling off in the HC scene. We are 2 guys that love HC and I wanted to share my words and music with you."

-Vinnie Value

Look out 2007 it's gonna get rough.

Skinheads Still Scare People - Self-Titled E.P.

I was told that this was Vinny Value’s (Warzone, NRSV and KYI) and Mike D’s (CR, KYI and Celebrity Murders) Oi! project. I feel a little misled because there isn’t much about this that sounds like Oi!. What Mike and Vinny have written is some great hardcore with a street-rock edge to it. The vocals, heavy guitar sound, hardcore riffage and lack of pub-rousing choruses really take away any possibility of categorizing this as Oi!.

There is a vintage sound to the recording—it’s raw and has a dated feel. At times this even reminds me a bit of early Avail. Songs like “Let Down” have a street punk vibe and “Where I Belong” has a rock edge, but overall it is hardcore with a bit of rock and roll.

What I like are the lyrics, very well written and delivered. The vocals sound like Jim McNaughtin of Devoid of Faith and To Hell and Back fame, which you just can’t go wrong with. For a side project, with Mike and Vinny doing everything, this is excellent and well worth picking up.

Rating: 7/10
