THE BAND

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The need to create is always a powerful thing. In the case of Squarewell, it has driven five people to strive for music that not only catches the ear, but catches the emotions and the sense of self as well. This steadfast desire to keep their sound as alive and as instinctive as that aspect of human nature that longs for music is what has kept the band complete. Squarewell is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, where what is felt is just as important as what is heard. Squarewell from Kentucky, are here to lay a slab of vinyl on the world by the way of a limited 500 first press run of a snazzy picture disc! All new songs, all new sound for an everchanging band. This one is a keeper, collector's beware!

Squarewell Is A New Emo/Hardcore band From Lousiville, Kentucky and will definately be a favorite for all the people who like Thursday, Elliott, Boysetsfire, Quicksand and Taking Back Sunday.

SQUAREWELL - Synthetic Stratagems 7"

Squarewell
Synthetic Sensations/Fleeting Stratagem
KOI Records
Rating: 4/5

Laminated review by Dustin

Squarewell are from Louisville, Kentucky; home of bands like Black Cross, Coliseum, Breather Resist, and Lords. The city seems to be a breeding ground for amazing bands these days, and Squarewell are no exception. This particular release is just a 2-song 7" picture disc. The songs aren't available on CD, so if you don't have a record player, too bad.

This young, up-and-coming band are not immature at all. They write some really great songs with all sorts of layers and time signature changes. For example, on the track "Fleeting Stratagem," the bassist has a really great little riff he keeps repeating, with some clean guitar picking to match the bass. The musicianship is just perfect, and this band definitely knows what they're doing.

Vocally, the band is just as strong. The singer ranges from high-notes in a nice singing voice straight into yells. He's got a great thing going there.

This post-hardcore band is definitely going to go somewhere as long as they keep writing songs as strong as these ones.
